I think a product manager would say we used to make over-engineered stuff. Products are made now with a planned life cycle. Appliances are engineered to last 7-years. It's better for corporate profits.

Call it planned, engineered obsolescence.

Alfred O Sloan started this at GM in the 20's. His plan was executed through styling changes. These days, it's done via engineering.
