RE: Special Dividends

"How do the rest of you account for special dividends? Include them in the base or keep them separate?"

I include them in my calculations for current income and as part of my growth calculation metric. But when I post I write out how things would have been if I hadn't received it. Thinking I'll beat 10% dividend growth for this year if I subtract my specials from 2020 though I haven't done the math yet.

I also include spinoffs that I sell as a special dividend. In 2020 that was VTRS from PFE, in 2022 I expect to get one from T, if I still own it when the time comes. Some folks will consider that incorrect, dishonest, or something but that's how I look at them and my spreadsheets are first for my own use, second to use numbers from when I post.
