They would need it in which case they could probably de-lever their risk to equities if that's the case, and of course we would need to define boatload.

If one had a 1.7% yield and the amount of income it produced was enough to live on, I might look at an annuity in that case. Someone in retirement with a portfolio yielding 1.7% is probably risk averse when it comes to income so an annuity would make sense I would think.
