Starfish is pretty unique in that it has no brain or blood or many other of the usual organs, and yet it is capable of performing more complex tasks than should be possible for its physiology.

In computer science some people have studied starfish as an example of a self healing autonomous distributed system. Starfish lack a CNS (and brain) so the question of interest is how do they accomplish their tasks and coordinate between different parts.
