Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., a thoroughbred in the portable PC race, has cut prices on its notebooks for the second time this year.

The Irvine, Calif., company announced today it has lopped up to 19 percent off the price of several Tecra, Satellite and Portege notebooks, at the same time shaving prices on its Equium desktops by as much as 10 percent.

The new prices are effective immediately.

A Tecra 740CDT, configured with a 166MHz Intel Corp. Pentium processor with MMX Technology, a 13.3-inch TFT (thin-film transistor) display, 16MB of RAM and a 2GB hard drive, now sells for $2,849, down 19 percent from its previous price of $3,499.

The company reduced by 7 percent a Tecra 750CDM configured with a 233MHz Pentium MMX processor, a 13.3-inch TFT display, 32MB of RAM and 4.8GB hard drive, from $5,399 to $4,999. A similarly configured Tecra 750DVD, featuring a digital versatile disk player, was also reduced by 7 percent, from $5,799 to $5,399.

Meanwhile, a Satellite 220CDS with a 133MHz Pentium processor, 16MB of RAM, a 1.34GB hard drive and a 12.1-inch dual-scan display has fallen in price from $1,499 to $1,349, a 10 percent drop.

On the mini-notebook front, Toshiba trimmed the price of its Libretto 50CT, featuring a 75MHz Pentium processor, a 6.1-inch TFT display, 16MB of RAM and a 772MB hard drive, by 13 percent, from $1,499 to $1,299.

Turning to desktops, the price of an Equium 6260M, configured with a 266MHz Pentium II processor, 32MB of RAM, a 3.7GB hard drive and a 16-speed CD-ROM drive, was reduced 10 percent, from $2,199 to $1,979.
