I don't have the time to do it anymore but I used to keep an unemployment spreadsheet that tracked the "real" numbers vs the government massaged numbers.
They started excluding more and more from the available side so they could claim better unemployment stats. The numbers today aren't anywhere close to the way they reported them in the 1980s.
Basically you should take total working age population 18-65 and exclude prison and military population. Now they exclude all kinds of stuff that lowers the available so the unemployed looks better.
Especially today where many people have 2 jobs, seniors over 65 still work and I know a lot of military had second jobs so it's probably even worse than my numbers.
