According to an Imperial College study that adjusted for immunity either via vaccines or previous infection, Omicron seems just as severe as Delta. It appears to be less deadly because it is now hitting a population (in the US) that has some immunity. Apparently, 90% of the US population shows some level of antibodies which, naturally, is related to a less severe result. Absent the present immunities, its highly contagious nature would be wreaking hell on us.

We’re slowly getting to herd immunity. But the unvaccinated who have no natural immunity thanks to having not been sick are probably very much at risk for a severe outcome thanks to its contagiousness. I think that’s a small group of our population.

The Imperial College study:

“We find no evidence (for both risk of hospitalisation attendance and symptom status) of Omicron having different severity from Delta, though data on hospitalisations are still very limited.”
