Where did Trump go wrong with his peace deal with the Taliban?

Despite claiming full credit for a book he didn’t write — and, according to the actual author, may not have read — Trump is a terrible dealmaker.

Look at North Korea. Kim Jong Un got treated as an equal by the man squatting in the most powerful office in the world, and had joint US-South Korea military exercises called off.

And what did he give in return? Squat.

How did that happen? Trump wasn’t negotiating on behalf of America. He was concerned only with himself. He gets to claim he was “the first American president to set foot on North Korean soil,” claim he deserves a Nobel Prize for his ability to walk a few steps, and dominate the news coverage for a week or two. So for him, it was a great outcome.

America got a doubling of Kim’s nuclear arsenal.

Same thing in Syria. Trump handed over our military bases to the Russians in exchange for… nothing. Sold out our Kurdish allies in exchange for… nothing. But now he can use that “gift” to Putin when it comes time to restart the Trump Tower Moscow pipe dream.

And now to Afghanistan. Trump wanted to claim that he “ended the war.” He didn’t care how. So he negotiated an Afghan deal without involving the Afghan government. He let 5,000 Taliban fighters out of jail in exchange for a promise they wouldn’t attack American troops. He got a vague promise that the Americans would be allowed to surrender peacefully, but didn’t ask for anything for the Afghan people.

Like the other two examples mentioned, it was a very one-sided deal. It benefited Trump, but not America or our allies.
