Everybody is now beating up on management, and to some degree they probably deserve it. However, I have seen lots of press releases from US and Korean companies claiming 'It's not impacting us', only to change dramatically two weeks later. For instance, up until fairly recently Samsung and others were claiming they were going to continue with their semi equ expansion plans. Part of the problem is just the sudden change which causes chaos. And another part is probably the issue of Asian 'face'. The Korean companies don't want to admit weakness. Heck, the Japanese have been in denial for 7 or 8 years. So, it isn't completely surprising that many US companies are saying 'Our customers tell us everything is ok.'. They are probably really being told that, and in a very convincing fashion. Only by looking at the outside facts, and being aware of the subtle methods of Asian expression, would it be possible to know that there was a cliff 10 feet in front of you.
