How Google Is Powered By AI

Jennifer Wales

As technology is advancing itself with every passing day, the next-gen services that are powered by ?? Artificial Intelligence or AI, such as Google search, Amazon’s Alexa, and self-driving cars are getting more and more mainstream. While in the past search engines constituted of search boxes where users were supposed to enter a certain text from which results were presented to them, standing at today’s time, developments that have been made possible by AI are ruling the search engines all over.

Now we can get results that are a lot more relevant to our searches and have also been adjusted in real-time, and are based upon a lot more factors such as according to our past browsing history, the intent of the searcher that can commonly be associated to the words that are used by him, along with other high performing results from other relevant searches. AI has given the search engines the potential to make their page exactly in accordance with the wants of the searchers, which in return, allows site owners to reach their business goals perfectly to get a higher customer satisfaction, increased revenue, high conversion rates, and so much more!

But what exactly does AI have to do in your Google search? Why can it be considered a breakthrough in the way that we have seen traditional search engines working? Gear yourself up, since in this article we will clear all that up for you!

1. AI In Google Devices and Its Functionalities
  • AI or artificial intelligence in the field of computer science allows machines to mimic human intelligence and is also capable of adapting themselves from data inputs and learning from them. With the help of ?? AI skills, search engines such as Google, become capable of learning from the data that have been collected from the users in order to generate the most relevant and accurate search experiences for the users. This learning, which is done in real-time, allows the instant tuning of search results in the backdrop just as the person searches for something.

  • This system of refinement has been made possible due to a number of factors that are programmed into the AI system, such as the past browsing history and purchases of the user, spelling errors that are common to be found, and the intent that may probably lie behind the words or language that is used in the query. It is indeed true that a majority of these factors can be coded into a search engine or be manually accounted for, but the AI system allows the tasks to be completed in a few nanoseconds at scale without the need for any human intervention. But in an addition, these AI systems can themselves make the necessary adjustments in order to improve accuracy and relevance and hence improve themselves and learn over time, like us human beings!
  • Search engines based upon AI allow the scope for semantic searches. For instance, if you are searching for the best hand sanitizers in 2020 or 2021, you will automatically get a list of recommended products that have been reviewed to be effective against the coronavirus. In order to get these recommendations, you do not have to specifically mention anything, but at the same time is vastly different from the product recommendation that you may have received sometime back in 2019, before the virus outbreak.
The biggest domain of semantic search is getting to understand the underlying intentions of the searcher through the contextual meaning of the query rather than just relying blindly on the exact words that the searcher has entered. Just as search engines are getting better at understanding the underlying meanings of the searcher’s queries, people have started utilizing the increased easiness of search engines and hence their expectations are changing vastly. The semantic searches that are powered by AI with the help of machine learning and NLP signifies that a search can function independently on its own and hence return much more relevant results.
  • Google search engine is going vastly beyond the realm of depending solely upon text inputs with the advent of visual and voice searches. They are constantly becoming the preferred way of searching on mobile phones and hence creating more avenues for AI searches. A recent report published by Gartner predicted that by the end of 2023, up to 70 percent of customer interactions shall start with smart assistants and speakers. With the advancement of computer vision getting combined with machine learning, computers shall soon enough be able to interpret what they are seeing in an image while performing a visual search, or hearing in a voice search.

2. AI Team in Google and the Major Skills That are Required Within the AI team

The AI Team in Google works in order to look for solutions to the problems that may have arisen in computational theories and algorithms, and other disciples that are driven by data such as machine learning, speech, journalism, and so on, which ultimately has an impact upon the Google products and other scientific progress. In order to achieve these two objectives, Google mainly focuses upon 2 tools, which are the software libraries that drive the research findings to the ultimate services and products, and the publications that are responsible for making the work known in the community.

The research areas that fall under the umbrella of artificial intelligence or AI team in Google is responsible for the following areas -
  • Algorithms and Theory
  • Data Mining and Modelings
  • Distributed Systems and Parallel Computing
  • Economics and Electronic Commerce
  • Information Retrieval and the Web
  • Machine Intelligence
  • Machine Perception
  • Natural Language Processing
You must have a thorough knowledge of the following areas, along with other skills such as programming languages and statistics in order to get into the AI team. But worry not, the professional “ Artificial Intelligence Certifications” provide you all the knowledge along with the necessary experience to get the best jobs in the industry!
