Geez, maybe this thread should be re-named "Talks with Gary!". Before responding to your comments, let me state that Cisco is my biggest personal holding and I have no position in Yui, but I am interested in the space.
1. How do I justify saying that the 3800 is a dog? Well, to be honest, you are the first person to question what I had accepted as an article of faith, but how about no Inverse Mux Access, no advanced voice capabilities (ABR or VBR, compression/silence suppression, etc.), and no SVC (switched virtual circuit) support. But the key thing is that the valley buzz is that no one is buying it (as an AAM, anyway)-do you hear differently?
2. You say 3Com isn't marketing their product? That will come as news to the product manager(s) of the 9600 and 9300.
3. You say that Mariposa is vapor ware-I've seen a working box-who am I supposed to believe, you or my eyes?
4. GDC/Sahara acquired? If Chuck wouldn't take $40+/share 18 months ago, you figure he's going to take, what, $4 today?
5. Digital Link bought by Yuri? Last I checked (Tuesday), they were still independent and hoping to flog the DL7100 to unsuspecting carriers. Is this (the Yuri acquisition) new?
As far as Cisco dominating data and voice, I know they would like to extend their data dominance (which, as you point out, is much more than just routers) into voice. I also think they are having a hard time figuring out how to do it, which they as much as admitted in the last quarterly earnings report. Am I underestimating them, or are you overestimating them? Final shot-Tag Switching will join RSVP in the slag heap of failed ideas, IMHO.
