Geof,

Thanks for the response. I think you did educate me in a few areas. Perhaps I can return the favor.

the 3800 ..has... no... Inverse Mux Access, no advanced voice capabilities (ABR or VBR, compression/silence suppression, etc.), and no SVC (switched virtual circuit) support.

The 3800 is a T1/E1 ATM mux only. This segment of the market is projected to account for 40%-50% of ATM sales for the next 3 years according to Vertical Systems. So, yes it has no AIM but I suspect they will add this. The point is this platform is going after the market sweet spot where users can justify the bandwidth.

Advanced VOICE? Sheesh! Way on this one bud. The 3800 has all the latest voice algorithms (G.729, G.729A, as well as standard ADPCM and PCM...also CES). In addition the 3800 support both analog and digital voice as well as advanced voice switching. So you're off on that one. In fact as far as ATM/FR data/voice CPE goes the 3800 has arguably the most advanced voice capability of any on the market right now. OH, that includes silience supression, echo cancellation etc.. as well as both CBR and VBR voice when the trunk is configured for ATM. Furthermore since the 3800 has been built to support both FR and ATM it allows customers to install now as FR then migrate to ATM later. This is critical in markets where ATM is not available which is just about everywhere outside the U.S..

You say 3Com isn't marketing their product? That will come as news to the product manager(s) of the 9600 and 9300.

Then news it is. They're not even a blip on the radar and do not show up on any market research reports with any significant (>5%) market share. If their marketing it...they're not doing much of a job.

You say that Mariposa is vapor ware-I've seen a working box-who am I supposed to believe, you or my eyes?

Yeah, I probably overstated this. The point is that the data sheet looks great, but the product delivers only a small subset of the features they've printed. It remains to be seen whether they deliver. Furthermore they still need to build a channel which can take a while as YURI is living through right now.

GDC/Sahara acquired? If Chuck wouldn't take $40+/share 18 months ago, you figure he's going to take, what, $4 today?

Point taken. But I believe I said either acquired or they go away. Hey, don't blame me if Chuck's stubborn. Personally I don't think they've got much of going concern.

Digital Link bought by Yuri? Last I checked (Tuesday), they were still independent and hoping to flog the DL7100 to unsuspecting carriers. Is this (the Yuri acquisition) new?

I keep getting Data Labs and Digital Link mixed up. DOH! Yes, Digital Link has been around for a while. Are they building anything new? If not... well.

In the end I think the real players are NN, NT, and CSCO...and perhaps LU long term if the build or buy a product line. The remaining players will be small potatoes in comparison. IMHO.

Oh, THanks for the slag heap comment. You may be right. Time will tell. BTW: What replaces RSVP for QoS over IP?
