Lego's strategy has been forever to artificially keep supply tight so they can keep prices up. I worked with a guy who spent his weekends driving around buying up select models at retail stores that were already becoming hard to find and were already selling for more on the secondary market. Some retail stores, not knowing the game or not caring, actually start marking down these harder to find models because they are last years models.
