This virus keeps changing fast… so, I doubt there will ever be enough herd immunity to make it go away and never come back. Just like influenza keeps coming back every year with new “variants”. But - they all have some cross-immunity, and - I haven’t seen a formal study - but it’s been noticed that Omicron seems to protect against Delta. The important thing is that the progression seems to be in the direction of milder forms.
