That is a great return for a complete portfolio. This idea of beating the S&P is just silly. Most retired folk like me needs to have some cash on hand and some conservative fixed income investments to insulate in a downturn. I understand that my cash and CDs/short term bond funds are not going to outperform the S&P but thats the whole idea. Similarly people that live off their dividends, like me, are going to gravitate toward higher yielding investments so we will not need to sell a stock in a market crash. These higher yielding stocks/funds tend not to outperform the S&P over longer periods of time in total return.
