My second attempt at a home network is a total failure so far. I am surprised I am still posting. I thought I would have to do another reformat the harddrive trick to get everything working again.

I picked up two 3COM Etherlink III 3C509B-COMBO (10BASE-T and Coaxial Cable) network cards at Fry's. I went for the combo as I wasn't sure which direction to go. They are for the ISA BUS as that is what I have available. My intent was to try a peer to peer network similar to one I have at work on a boat. I don't have a computer to dedicate as a server yet (or can a work station double as a server? in the Win 95 OS as that's what is on this machine now and I intend on using it as is for the time being).

The network on the boat is very simple and would serve my immediate needs so I tried to duplicate it. Simply install the Ethernet cards, install NETBUOI sp? use a coax cable with termination and you have a network with shared resources. What could be easier??

I haven't been able to get past the first step. The card is Plug and Play and Win 95 see's it and installs some drivers. The first thing I noticed is that my sound card stopped working and my SCSI devices are gone. Then I tried my Internet connection and a message first told me that my modem wasn't installed or that it wasn't configured for dial-up, then another message popped up saying that something else was trying to use my dial up connection.

I went into the Control panel /network and took out one of two dial up adapters thinking that maybe one of them shouldn't be there...still no modem connection, no sound and no SCSI.

I took out the Ethernet card and everything works again! Why would one card disable three other cards? I don't know if it is a hardware conflict or something in those network configuration screens or a combination.

I will probably try installing the card on my Aptiva next and hope for better luck..after I relax a bit.

Regards
