What's so "amazing" about that?

The pandemic only got started in January of 2020. It wasn't until March when COVID started spreading and the lockdowns started.

And even then, the "Alpha" variant wasn't as easily transmissible as Delta, but Delta didn't become widespread until 2021.

There are lots of variables to consider when analyzing why the excess death rates were similar in 2020 and 2021.
