But in any case, the only way the small number of American troops you envision could deter Russian aggression is by acting as a buffer with the implicit threat of American retaliation if they were harmed, and right there we're back to possible escalation and nuclear confrontation. Somehow I don't see that as being in the U.S. national interest. As for the whole Ukraine situation, you Americans seem to be forgetting "Fuck the E.U." and your whole sordid involvement in it. thenation.com
