US troops in Ukraine?
What are you talking about?
US troops are not in Ukraine, and there are no plans to put them in. Ukraine is not a member of NATO, and US is not under obligations to protect this country.
You got something wrong here.
All we are talking about are tough sanctions against Russia in case of invasion + help by supplying weapons to Ukraine.

But in any case, the only way the small number of American troops you envision could deter Russian aggression is by acting as a buffer with the implicit threat of American retaliation if they were harmed, and right there we're back to possible escalation and nuclear confrontation.

Somehow I don't see that as being in the U.S. national interest.

Exactly, it's the only way to deter Putin from invasion.

What do you suggest? New Munich 1938? Surrender to Putin, remove US troops from NATO countries, and invite Putin to conquer Europe? That's what Trump will do, not Biden.
Fine with you, not with me.
