There may be "thousands" of ISP's but only a few with national / international backbones in the league of Concentric's. As the price of unlimited access drops from the current $12-$19 range to the $9-14 area, competitive, cost-saving equipment is going to be more and more important. Re: patents ? Imagine they have copyright protection on their software - it's the heart of the switch.
