The point is that the President of the United States, whoever that person is, has an enormous ability to set the moral tone of the nation. For good or for bad. A leader has the ability to either model acceptance. Or hatred.


Just 14 years later and two Presidents later, a different President had an event at the White House. The President was Woodrow Wilson and the event was a screening of Birth Of A Nation. A movie that glorified the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan was reinvigorated in part due to the film.

In 1901, Theodore Roosevelt, only one month into his Presidency, invited Booker T. Washington, a prominent African American leader, to dine with him and his family in the White House. It was national news. And a source of pride among black folks. Segregationists went ballistic.
