Digital Cameras Enter Full Scale Production

Comline Electronics Wire via Individual Inc. -- Hsin Hsing Data Products will begin full scale production of digital cameras this year. According to newest statistics from the Department of Optics at the Institute for Industrial Technology and Research, ten local manufacturers will begin manufacturing digital cameras this year. Total worldwide capacity is to reach 350,000 units, 10% of world capacity. The Institute said that the current producers were Hong You Technology, P'u Li Optics, Li Chie Computer, Ch'uan You Computer, Wan Neng Optics, and Ming Sheng. New entrants in 1998 include Hsin Pao Technology, Yuan Hsing Technology, Hua Ching and Hsin Hong. The company's most outstanding quality is the investment of over 200 million yuan. Computer related entrants are mostly involved with scanners or peripherals; more traditional manufacturers are seeking new markets for renewal of conventional camera markets. P'u Li Optics Sales Manager Ch'ou Chen Hsiang says the company is already looking at second generation products, and increased domestic sales. Hong You Technology says it has already introduced a third generation product which is more attractive and has many more functions. According to the Institute, worldwide production could reach 3,500,000 units in 1998, with Taiwan having 10% of the total. Japanese and US manufacturers expect a market of 5 million units by the year 2000. Casio, Kodak, Hewlett Packard, and Canon are all involved in the market.
