no one wore masks back then. don simmons was the first to wear a mask in goal. He had scars painted all over his mask. terry Sawcuck played first for boston bruins and then claimed nervous breakdown as i understand the back ground . then the next year you find him in goal for detroit. He was a great goalie one of the best! Hockey was brutal back then. Guy would get cut up with sticks to their heads. Then they would come out with ice scrapers and scrap off the blood from the ice.
