One thing that came out in yesterday's shareholder meeting was that
it is not just capacity that decides the the selection of the head
supplier. In addition to head performance it is also the cost,
and Applied Magnetics through cost controls at this time is targeting
to make the most cost effective head.

Last year you could see that Read Rite had a top heavy corporate structure and as far as I can tell now not much has changed. So
I would think that the cost to make their heads due to the thick
management layer will be pretty high.

For this reason, a hard drive company may select a head supplier
because of lowest cost available for a given head design, best
performance or best capacity. BUT not necessarily all three are
required. Correct me if I am off target.
