Why it matters: Russia claims to be waiting for "concrete answers" to its demands that NATO rule out further expansion and roll back its presence in eastern Europe before deciding its next steps on Ukraine. But the U.S. and NATO have called those proposals "non-starters," and Friday's meeting offered no breakthroughs, so it's unclear how written answers might change the equation.

Pressure is building. No one’s talking about it, but a potential confrontation between nuclear powers is a huge thing. May explain some of the stock market's behavior.

The US and NATO insist that the question about Ukraine joining NATO is an issue to be decided exclusively between Ukraine and NATO. As far as the Russians, NATO tanks in Eastern Ukraine would represent a permanent colonoscopy up the Russian's butt. It would make European Russia indefensible by conventional means (to quote (from memory) Spengler, from an essay a few years back).

I think both sides will have to give something in order to avoid an end of the world scenario.
