A large NATO army in Ukraine might be considered a threat. The much more likely low level deployment like in the one in the Baltics (whether in the Baltics or in Ukraine) not so much.

But even that isn't all that relevant to the current situation, at least not in direct terms, because it wasn't going to happen either.
Ukraine to the Russians is more like Mexico wanting to become a Soviet client
More like a Russian (or perhaps Chinese) client. We aren't in a full blown cold war anymore. If it happened the US would get rather frosty towards Mexico, but its very unlikely the US would invade.

But not even that since the Ukraine isn't on a path to becoming a client state. It just doesn't want to be a client state of Russia, or get pushed around and invaded by Russia. Its more like Mexico asking for an alliance with Russia or China, after the US had earlier taken part of Mexico (and not in the 19th century but the 21st), and then being told no.
