It's copper versus aluminum technology. The semiconductors are made from silicon for both technologys. The advantage of copper is their low reistance compared with aluminum. Thus they have lower RC time constants (propagation delays) then aluminum for a given geometry.

Switching frequency is still the primary factor in heat generation.
