Another thought occurred to me during this recent Ukraine vs Russia chat.

Contrary to popular - almost universal - belief, the USA is NOT a closed system. Everyone is watching and judging us. None of the big powers - China, Russia and the EU - are our friends. All of them would love to leave us behind in the dust - economically, technologically, militarily and so on. They would love to see us step down from a global leadership position.

I think part of the reason for the Russian buildup *may* be to expose the US to the Europeans as a dangerous power, willing to risk major global confrontations based on dim, sloppy thinking of bureaucrats like Jake Sullivan (for example). That the US is ready to risk their and their children’s wellbeing because of some paper pusher’s theoretical fantasies. This would not be their only reason, and probably not even one of the major reasons… but they wouldn’t be unhappy if, along the way, they can discredit NATO and weaken the relationship between the US and the EU.

I know one thing - if I lived in Europe, the thought would bother me. So, it probably bothers millions of people.
