In my years up there I never caught a halibut over 40 lbs. +/-. Ones I did get were right tasty though.

One evening we were aboard a friends 73' vessel, once a floating hardware/sporting goods store for Canadian Montgomery Ward. We were anchored for the evening and Wife was outside playing a halibut jig.

By and by she hollers for help. Friend and I went out, took the pole and worked up and down the length of the boat trying to free what we thought was a snag. Eventually the snag took off and swung the stern right quick. Then the snag ran to the end of the line, broke it, and moseyed for elsewhere.

Always wondered.
