I never landed one of real bragging rights either. Top one didn't get weighed, but could have been 60 lbs.

Brother in law caught a 270 lb one in Gustavus by Pleasant Island. He had to tow it back to town in a 12 foot skiff. I wasn't there, but shared in the spoils. Kind of hard to finish that much without sharing.

Weirdest thing I ever caught fishing for halibut was a porpoise. Jigging on the bottom by Halibut Cove at Shelter, got distracted by several porpoise on the surface. One of them went down about 90 feet and got my bait. It took a little bit for me to realize what happened. The rod slammed down and the line took off and wouldn't slow. I tried tightening up the drag. It all happened so fast. I hate to think how painful for the porpoise it was. The drag finally broke the line. Hope the line left was short.

I had a hold of a couple of barn doors. One fishing by myself at slack tide at the underwater moraine in the beginning of Endicott arm. That may have been a salmon shark. Whatever it was, it cut through the steel leader. I was in a small Zodiac. Thinking about a shark gave me the creeps. It was a violent thing down there.

The other time was in Sitka. It was alive, for sure - not a snag, but it was not coming up fast or at all. We made sure we'd only get a big one by baiting with a full salmon head. That acted just like you'd expect a big halibut to do, but you never know. Caught a big skate in Gustavus that took a while to reel in. My young nephew was so scared of it, but it was pretty docile compared to halibut. They can get crazy on you.

Yep, they make you wonder.
