The general public should never ever invest directly in individual stocks.

They should only ever buy the very cheapest index funds, into which they should save the same amount every month. And they should solemnly swear to themselves beforehand that they will never ever sell, unless they absolutely have to. ('Have to' = some external cause, not because 'the market' has fallen XY %.)

(Unless maybe if it's because of a family member or friend who they admire very deeply and trust 100 % who runs the company, or something like that, or if the have unusual conviction/certainty in a specific situation for some other reason.)
