Most of those dogs are terrible choices for most people due to a variety of factors. A family/personal guard dog does not have to take down on an intruder by himself. It is sufficient for it be vigilant, alert, and loud. Some American bulldogs (not mentioned there) are more than enough. They are family friendly and don't require much maintenance or exercise, but are scary looking enough and strong enough to deter the would be intruders. Going even smaller, papillons make a great watch dog and are super smart. They are high energy, but due to their small size it is easier to provide them with enough exercise. They are a great choice for apartments or small houses.
