Could the original vaccines have been redesigned to function with Omicron? Or would that have been an entirely new vaccine project?

I had confidence in the existing vaccines, even after Delta appeared, I think. But it seemed that early on Omicron was showing resistance to it. We were told Omicron was less problematic anyway, IIRC.

And one day last week the US reported 3,000 deaths.

Did the vaccine need "adjustment" or would it required an entirely new development effort, or what?

Obviously, I know less than zero about how these things are made.
