I thought I'd chime in over here "on the quieter side". I think Kolpin gave some good advice about investor phycology over on the other site. You know your son better then anyone here.

I'm a fan of dollar cost averaging or opportunistic purchases. I think the current condition of the market favors opportunistic purchases over lump sum investment.

My recommendation would be to look at the companies on your list and determine which ones are selling at a value and still have good fundamentals that the market has punished unnecessarily. Some on your list you may want to consider would be LMT, AMGN, TXN, AAPL.

I'm going through a similar situation as I slowly sell off a ESOP plan my wife had and redeploy those funds in other companies.
