If your son is leaning towards investing half, then I suppose that's the best approach. The downside of that is, how is the rest going to be invested? People often say they will DCA in over time but they don't have a method or system for doing that, they often times procrastinate out of fear or uncertainty. Other times they think, the market has gone up too much and decide to wait for price to come back down but their inexperience prevents them from acting properly.

When advising young people I often have to find out their level of knowledge and experience. Will they be taking an active part in investing, an active part in managing the positions, or are they going to be a passive investor?

The answers to these questions would certainly have a major impact on any suggestions I could make because there are different tactics to use based on a person's level of investing knowledge.

If I had more details, I might be more useful to you and him. If you wish to take it private, I'm open with that as well.
