If you were to take only one trip to Europe, imo it must include Rome. No other place in the world has as much history and beauty as Rome. About beauty - Florence would give it a run for the money, but overall - Rome. Before you go - or even if you don’t - it’s worth reading a couple of books about the Republic and the Empire. So many striking parallels with what we are living through these days. Edit - this is not the first book in the series, but this writer wrote a wonderful series of well researched novels about the 1st century BC. books.google.com
