Austria's right-wing government is imposing a €3,600 fine, every three months, for each Covid unvaccinated resident.

This starts in February and lasts through January 2024. The initial fine without much ado be €600, with a €3,600 fine with full judicial proceedings.

Roughly 68% of Austria's population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, one of the lowest rates in western Europe. As infections set records three weeks ago, the government announced a fourth national lockdown with compulsory vaccinations.

Many of the remaining 32% of Austrians are skeptical about vaccines, a view encouraged by the far-right nazi Freedom Party, the third biggest in parliament.

Karoline Edtstadler, Austria's minister for constitutional affairs, told a news conference with Health Minister Wolfgang Mueckstein,

"We don't want to punish people who are not vaccinated with fines.

We merely want to win them over and convince them to get vaccinated
