Same with MSFT. You could have put together a perfectly good Mac-Unix-DOS-Windows LAN in 1991, letting everyone have their computer of choice, but no MIS would have recommended it, because it's harder than having one OS. So corporations bet on the favorite, Microsoft, ensuring its success.
Good point. I have another, using a similar analogy. I have heard and read that Cisco doesn't make the best products. I can believe this because many of the smaller companies can move quicker into new markets. Many of them have their whole business is based on this one new product. But, do you know what sets Cisco apart, and why they will continue their reign? Marketing. Here is the analogy. In the early 80's, when M$-DOS came out, what was the 'best' operating system out there? Arguably not DOS. It was Unix. But, Micro$oft was able to successfully market DOS and sell it for a really cheap price to consumers. Consumers picked up on this, and the rest is history. Do you think the same thing is happening now with Cisco? I would say yes! End-to-end networking is the solution for Cisco, just as DOS was for M$...
