How do the Synvisc drug work for joints.
I have had an injection of a drug called Synvisc to my worn out hip
joint and it seems to help a great deal. What is this drug, and what
should I know about it?

COMMENT BY KENNETH S. MERRIMAN, MD, ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

Synvisc is one of two hyaluronic acid (hyaluronin) products available in
the USA over the last 3-4 months.
They work by several potential routes to aleviate pain in mildly to
moderately arthritic joints ( mostly used of OA)
It is marketed as a "fluid prosthesis" or visco-supplementation ie it
just
adds some "padding" to the joint
But it also has some effects on inflamation and some effects on joint
contracture.
In the USA it is mostly used for knees but could be useful in hip or
shoulder or elsewhere It does not seem to have any big down side except
for 1) cost 2) pain from the injections themselves. I personally have
not encountered any significant adverse reactions so far and it seems
to be working well (for some very very well)
