The constitution was pure genius for the time it was written.

But it is also antiquated as regards modern thinking e.g. it could not imagine large social programs like Social Security.

What we need to do is follow the thinking of the more advanced countries like the Nordic countries who legislate humanity more often than we do,, by a mile.

The right wing is always talking about adhering to the intent of the constitution which is nuts. As written in the 18th century it allowed slavery and women could not vote.

The reason I have always been a progressive Democrat is because when it comes to social programs needed for a healthier society the liberals follow the science e.g. how much better kids do if they have public pre schools, universal health care.

And society does better with more humane prisons robust social programs that help people when they nee it.

combjelly:" It certainly would contribute to the general wellbeing as much as the Post Office, public libraries and public schools.

Lane 3: "There is a huge conceptual chasm between public facilities for patrons to use and paying on demand for the goods and services of individual citizens. I don't see anyone who drew up the US Constitution conceiving of the federal role in said well being going beyond public health infrastructure, if that. They left most authorities to the States.
