I'll wade in here.
I work in health care and have spent time working on the front lines. I also teach mental health and prevention as part of my role.

You both are correct.
There has been a dramatic increase in mental health related illnesses in the past two years (but it precedes Covid as well). From an employee perspective it used to be about 1 in 10 were mental health related absences.....now it is 1 in 3. By 2030 depression will be the #1 disability in the world....surpassing heart disease. So yes it is on the rise and yes we do need to be more proactive....but I also don't point the finger at Covid or the restrictions as the main cause.

In terms of Covid related restrictions. The majority of increases in mental health related concerns is not with the general public but with health care employees....and that is related to the volume of work and our facilities being at over capacity. Burn out if you will but it has seriously impacted the workforce I oversee.

The only mental health concern I am aware of that directly correlates to the restrictions is not with adults but with our kids. The loss of direct social contact has had an impact and is of concern. Thankfully social media/gaming has provided an ongoing outlet (versus when I was a kid and would have to write a letter)....but social medial also has its own pitfalls.
(actually that's not true as the stress of potentially losing ones job is definitely an adult factor)

These restrictions while difficult for some have allowed others to thrive. It certainly demonstrated to the corporate world that many tasks that were thought needed to be face to face...can be done from distance. I suspect there could be a glut of empty office space going forward as businesses downsize and more work from home. (we are already in discussions along these lines)

I am biased here. I have seen first hand the negative impact of loosening restrictions too soon so as much as I would like to return to normal.......I'd rather err on the side of caution. It is harder on us mentally with this yo yo tightening and loosening and tightening and loosening........but that is also the nature of a virus. (we have no idea what the next variant will be like......and yes there will be another variant)

I also see how this debate has created rifts (even in my own family). That is certainly a personal stressor for me. It's not a perfect situation by any means and I certainly don't have answers........I do think this is a good topic for debate

Just for background: I have been in the anti vax camp my entire working career....including my kids. I can tell you when this all hit I stepped up and put my personal views aside and got the shot. It wasn't about me...it was about what is best for those around me and the community in general. You can agree or disagree and that is fine...it is the position I have taken. I have no issue at all with some temporary changes to personal freedoms.

Lastly I am on day 2 of testing Covid +ve. I am triple vaxed .... I can tell you that this has kicked the sh*t out of me and I can only imagine how much worse it may have been if I wasn't vaxed.

Anyway mental health is not something we want to lose sight of...... mental health concerns have been building long before Covid showed up.........it just brought it a little more to the forefront
