His is a single phase motor though so it likely has a start capacitor or start windings to get going. I just have to wonder if it worked before, why it would suddenly change. It must be stopping between windings then is getting repelled/attracted out of sync on start up. Could be a dead leg too.
My air compressor just died. I tore into the motor and all it is is the wire came off the thermal protector that has the reset button. Unfortunately it has a permanent attachment terminal that looks like the wire was somehow tacked on. I've tried soldering to it but couldn't get it hot enough. I looked online and they don't sell it separately. There are some for air conditioner motors kind of like it without the button that automatically reset but neither say what the cutoff temperatures are. I'm about to just jumper the wires together and call it good. It's a 5 HP 220 motor and the temp protection has never tripped in the 25 years I've used it. I have a brand new extra spare compressor motor but the mount is different so I'd have to fab a bracket for it.
I FINALLY got the UTV project about done. Motor is rebuilt and running great. Transmission smooth, brakes rebuilt and firm though one caliper piston face is messed up and replacement part is backordered. I thought I was done but a stupid coolant hose keeps seeping at pressure. I'm going to try double clamping it otherwise I guess I'll have to order another one and assume the old one is somehow stretched or scored on the inside somewhere.
