We lived a few blocks from McGill university during the summer of 1975 or 1976 for three months while my brother and his French Canadian wife went on their extended honeymoon. It was very much like living in NYC. People were open and friendly, with lots of great restaurants, cafes and entertainment. We were very relaxed and enjoyed our stay.

I have also hitchhiked across Canada and spent summers in Alberta. Honestly, I found Canada to be a more humanistic version of the USA.
