It's really not surprising considering the (relative) success of Mac OS 8. I'm really not worried about Intel producing .25 micron parts in quantity. I have no doubt they can do it. I have quite a bit of respect for Intel's manufacturing prowess. What I do doubt is your completely uninformed opinion regarding IBM's .25u process. Apple only just announced G3 computers on November 10 (and, as you said, it takes a quarter or two). I'm not sure why any of these chips would be selling in retail yet--Apple doesn't have a very big market for that type of thing.

Just FYI, a Pentium II 300, which has been around for a while now, sells for $557 at the Chip Merchant. The brand new 275 mhz PowerPC G3 is $520. chips.ibm.com
