I've been on both sides of that fence. I am much more of a libertarian than it comes across. It is only the extreme environment in the US that makes me look otherwise.

True libertarianism is about allowing the maximum freedom to the maximum number of people. When the individual is not free and is a subject of the collective, the society on the whole suffers and suffers a lot. The problem with the American version of Libertarianism (uppercase L) is that it offers no protection to the individual from private despots. This fits the rich and powerful just fine because with a weak government and in a free for all environment, they will do better than the rest. Many of them are able to wrestle the government to the ground.

From where I stand, I will always support policies that maximize the freedom for the greatest number of people. That is my guiding light. Sometimes that means curtailing government intrusion, other times it means limiting corporate rights. And on rare occasions, it means government support in areas of need - but only inasmuch as it pertains to increasing the individual's options and freedoms or protects the society against greater harm.
