Reginald, thanks for the informative post. I agree with your conclusion also.

Another area and problem with Microsoft and the DOJ I believe is public perception. After all the DOJ is influenced (unfortunately) by politics.

The public see's the Microsoft operating system in every computer and believes they have no competition. Very few see the big picture as you have outlined. Having the richest man in the world doesn't help that perception either.

Many people still buy into the notion that a person could only get that rich by doing something unethical or illegal. This is part of the backdrop which gives the DOJ the encouragement to go after Microsoft.

On the other hand Intel is still a less known company to the general public. The ones that do know something about Intel will typically also know something about Intel's competitor's AMD and CYRIX/NSM. This could be due to allot of publicity about the supposed chip wars.

One question. Do you know roughly how much percentage of profits Microsoft controls in the software industry? I seem to remember it being pretty high. Something like 40% rings a bell, but I could be mistaken.
