BC, from the excerpt:
“The reason it’s not working is because people aren’t complying with the mandates,” they’d say, contrary to overwhelmingly consistent survey data that measured mask usage in the 90-98% range across most of the United States and Europe.
Count me as one of those people who say just that.

To put it bluntly, people in America suck at wearing masks. I've personally seen the following:

- Some people don't cover their noses with their masks. (Like what's the point?)

- LOTS of people just wear cloth masks instead of N95 or equivalent, 'cause it looks stylish or something like that.

- People will take off their masks for convenience, e.g. our esteemed governor of California at a three-Michelin-star restaurant, or our honorable mayor of San Francisco who just wants to party away from the "fun police."

- Some people take off their masks before sneezing. Really?

Then there's the fact that America is the home of the Karens and the Kens who will try to assert their "fReEdOm tO bReAtHe." There is hardly anyone in Asia who does that because unlike in America, shame is still a thing in Asian cultures.
