>>first things first, get your network cards installed and recognized by Win without the errors<<

The cards are installed and recognized by Win 95.

Configuration

Client for Microsoft Networks
Com Etherlink III ISA 3C509b-Combo) in PnP mode
AOL Adapter
Dial-Up Adapter
NetBEUI> 3Com Etherlink III ISA (3C509b-Combo) in PnP mode
NETBEUI>Dial-UP Adapter
TCP/IP> 3COM EtherLink III ISA (3C509b-Combo) in PnP mode
TCP/IP>AOL Adapter
TCP/IP>dial-UP Adapter
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

Can I get ride of the AOL stuff??

The Compaq computer is called zeus1 and is in workgroup zeusnet.
zeus1 sees itself and zeus2 which is also in workgroup zeusnet.

The IBM Aptiva is named zeus2 and is in workgroup zeus2. Zeus2 does not see itself nor zeus1. It has a network icon in the network neighborhood but when I click on it it is says that it can not browse the neighborhood.

After I installed the card in the Compaq I received a message that "The DHCP client was unable to obtain an IP network address from a DHCP server. Do you want to be asked again" I answered no.

After I installed the card in the Aptiva I received no such message even though the cable was not yet hooked up.

The card installation on the Aptiva fought me (more than the Compaq). There was an IRQ conflict with the PCI adapter. Win 95 couldn't figure out what it was and the 3com utility crashed when I used it to auto configure. I disabled an extra com port and took it's IRQ 3. The device manager still gave me the yellow check mark. I manually set the IRQ to eleven and the yellow mark in the device manager went away.

The strange thing was I got several messages about whether or not to overwrite newer files with older files when the drivers for the 3COM 3C509B-COMBO NIC were loading. The Win 95 suggested that I keep the newer files so I did. The Win 95 version on the Aptiva is older than Win 95 on the Compaq.

My three thoughts are

1) to try and upgrade Win 95 to a newer version and then reinstall the card (is this a free upgrade from the microsoft site?)

2) take the NIC ISA card back and get one for the PCI slot

3) overwrite the newer files with older files?

Regards

PS The ovens installed in about two hours. Hook the black wire to the black wire, the red wire to the red wire and the white wire to the white wire.
