The American left was in love with Gorby. They thought he was going to be the savior of communism. Only flowery praise came from Big Media. Time magazine named Gorbachev its "Man of the Decade" in early 1990. When he visited in 1990 (I remembered it as earlier than that, but I looked it up) he was treated as a rock star. When he visited the Twin Cities they threw a parade for him. People lined the street to cheer him as he passed (you wonder why the Twin Cities are in the mess they are?)
