Strong sales of Sony's PlayStation helped fuel a 45 per cent rise in third-quarter pre-tax profits at the Japanese electronics maker, with the games consoles and software accounting for 25 per cent of operating profits.
Analysts hailed the results. "We regard Sony as the most competitive of the Japanese consumer electronics companies," said Andrew Haskins, industry analyst at HSBC James Capel in Tokyo.
Mr Haskins said Sony "has built a competitive advantage that is sustainable, its strategy is very well defined and absolutely right".
Sales in its electronics products division rose 22 per cent, helped by firm demand for digital video cameras, MiniDisc players, flat screen TVs and PlayStation game consoles and software.
